जहाँ सुबिथा की बहन ने जनरल नर्सिंग की पढ़ाई की, वहीं उनके भाई को प्री-डिग्री पूरी करने के बाद दिहाड़ी मज़दूर के तौर पर काम करना पड़ा।\n \nनौ साल की उम्र में मम्प्स (गलसुआ) की गंभीर बीमारी और तेज़ बुख़ार के कारण सुबिथा के कानों की नसें बेकार हो गईं, जिससे उनकी सुनने की क्षमता कम होने लगी। धीरे-धीरे आवाज़ों की दुनिया उनसे दूर होने लगी, और हालाँकि शुरू में उन्हें इससे काफ़ी मानसिक तकलीफ़ हुई, लेकिन धीरे-धीरे उन्होंने अपनी नई सच्चाई को अपनाना सीख लिया। उन्होंने कोथाचिरा के सरकारी अपर प्राइमरी स्कूल में पहली से सातवीं कक्षा तक पढ़ाई की और हालाँकि चौथी कक्षा में ही उनकी सुनने की क्षमता कम होने लगी थी, फिर भी उन्हें अपने दयालु सहपाठियों और शिक्षकों का साथ मिला। उन्होंने पेरिंगोडे हाई स्कूल से दसवीं कक्षा की पढ़ाई पूरी की।\n \nप्री-डिग्री कोर्स के लिए सुबिथा 'कुन्नमकुलम स्कूल फ़ॉर द डेफ' (बधिरों के लिए स्कूल) में शामिल हुईं, जहाँ उन्होंने सांकेतिक भाषा (साइन लैंग्वेज) सीखी, जो आगे चलकर उनके जीवन का एक अहम हिस्सा बन गई। (पहले वे होंठों की हरकत देखकर बात समझती थीं, और उनमें बचपन से ही बोलने की काबिलियत भी है।) उनका परिवार उनकी आगे की पढ़ाई का खर्च नहीं उठा सकता था, इसलिए उन्होंने सिलाई सीखने के लिए गुरुवायूर के लिटिल फ्लावर कॉन्वेंट में दाखिला लिया; उन्होंने हाथ की कढ़ाई और कपड़े डिज़ाइन करने में महारत हासिल की। ​​अगले साल, उन्होंने कोल्लम ज़िले के वलाकोम में बहरों के लिए बने एक कॉलेज में दाखिला लिया। हालाँकि, हॉस्टल की ज़िंदगी की चुनौतियों और पैसों की तंगी के कारण उन्हें अपनी पढ़ाई बीच में ही छोड़नी पड़ी।\n \nतभी उन्हें पलक्कड़ ज़िले के पट्टाम्बी में नेशनल डेफ फ़ैमिली केयर (NDFC) संस्था के बारे में पता चला, जो कोयंबटूर की भारतीयार यूनिवर्सिटी से जुड़ी हुई थी। उन्होंने वहाँ बीएससी के लिए दाखिला लिया। ग्रेजुएशन के बाद उन्हें शोरनूर में डेफ रिसोर्स डेवलपमेंट सोसाइटी (DRDS) में ट्यूटर की नौकरी मिली, जहाँ उन्होंने डिस्टेंस एजुकेशन के ज़रिए डिग्री कर रहे छात्रों को पढ़ाया। वहाँ काम करते हुए उन्होंने डिस्टेंस एजुकेशन से ही एमएससी  भी की। वे कहती हैं, \"मेरी माँ ने और भाई ने यह पक्का करने के लिए बहुत मेहनत की कि मैं अपनी पढ़ाई जारी रख सकूँ।\"\n \nजब वे 22 साल की थीं, तो सुबिथा को कन्नूर के एक सैनिक से प्यार हो गया। चार साल के रिश्ते के बाद, उन्होंने अपने परिवारों की पूरी सहमति से शादी कर ली। सुबीथा कहती हैं, \"साथ रहने पर ही किसी रिश्ते की कमियों और खामियों का पता चलता है।\" जब उनकी बेटी अंजलिना दो साल की थी, तब उनके पति ने उन्हें छोड़ दिया। वे कहती हैं, \"उस घटना ने मुझे और भी मज़बूत बना दिया।\" अपनी मौजूदा नौकरी मिलने के बाद उन्होंने एक अपार्टमेंट किराए पर लिया, जहाँ वे और अंजलिना खुशी-खुशी रहती हैं। चाथुकुट्टी की मौत तीन साल पहले 66 साल की उम्र में किडनी से जुड़ी बीमारी के कारण हुई थी;
